Pauliina Mäkelä

Pauliina Mäkelä (b. 1980) is an illustrator and graphic designer living in Helsinki. She graduated from the Lahti Institute of Design in 2005 with a degree in graphic design.

Pauliina's colourful and dreamy illustrations are charged with rich emotion and creativity. "The illustration should always add something to the assignment: the image should be an interpretation, not a decoration", she sums up. Her technique is a mixture of pencil drawing and digital colouring.

Besides illustration Pauliina occasionally draws comics. She is a member of the Kutikuti studio, and part of the editorial staff of the experimental comics newspaper Kuti. Her debut comic album 'Karnevaalit' was awarded at the annual Finnish graphic design competition Vuoden Huiput in 2006. She is also the winner of the 2007 international comics competition organized by the Fumetto festival in Luzern.
